Radon Testing

lung cancer - it‘s not just from smoking!

Smoking remains the #1 cause of lung cancer but the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the Surgeon General rank radon as the #2 cause of lung cancer. Lung cancer kills more Americans each year that breast, colorectal and pancreatic cancers combined.

what is radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas produced by the natural breakdown of uranium and radium in soil, rock and water. It is odorless, tasteless, colorless and is a Class-A carcinogen. Every home has radon. The question is whether or not your home has elevated levels that are dangerous.

how does radon cause cancer?

As radon decays it gives off energy in the form of alpha particles. When a person breathes in radon gas, the energy from the decaying alpha particles can damage DNA in the cells of the lungs. Radon also decays into daughter atoms polonium 214 and polonium 218 which are solid and attach to tiny particles, like dust, that we breathe in. These particles can stick to the layer that lines the lungs. As the unstable polonium atoms decay they emit still more radioactive energy which contributes to a series of mutations in the lungs which lead to cancer.

how does it enter my home?

Radon is drawn into the home from the soil below. Common entry routes are slight cracks in foundation or concrete floors, sump pits, crawlspaces and / or wall-floor joints. Every home has it.
